Spinal Cord Injury and Traumatic Brain Injuries
Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal cord trauma can be caused by any number of injuries to the spine. They can result from motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports injuries (diving into shallow water, contact sports such as football), industrial accidents, gunshot wounds, assault, and other causes.
Spinal cord injuries often result in loss of sensation or paralysis. This includes total paralysis or numbness and varying degrees of movement or sensation loss. Death is possible, particularly if there is paralysis of the breathing muscles.
A person’s recovery from a spinal cord injury usually depends on the level of injury. Injuries near the top of the spine result in more extensive disability than do injuries low in the spine.
Prevention includes using proper safety equipment at work, checking the depth of water before diving, inspecting for obstacles before sledding, using proper technique and equipment when playing contact sports, wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle or motorcycle or horseriding, and buckling your seatbelt every time you get into a car.

Traumatic Brain Injuries
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) also called intracranial injury occurs when an outside force traumatically injures the brain. TBI is a major cause of death and disability. Some common causes of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) include car and truck accidents, sports and recreational activities, and slip and falls, but they can be caused by anything which causes the head to abruptly strike a solid object and the brain to hit the interior wall of the skull. Prevention is often technology based such as the use of air bags, helmets, etc.
TBI can result in physical losses and cognitive and emotional changes. It can lead to permanent disability. Cognitive therapy helps TBI patients improve their physical and mental functioning, and also addresses the emotional changes which sometimes occurs following a traumatic brain injury, such as anger control problems and depression. Early intervention is important.
